Transfer priorities

As I have previously discussed in this forum, I think it’s good news for us that Mido is returning. Although I no longer see him as a first team regular, I do think he will provide cover to Berbatov and be a useful squad player.

However, my concern is that with just over 48 hours to run until the transfer window closes, this is the only news that Martin Jol announces. As I have previously said, strengthening our attacking ranks is all very well, but it is my third priority.

The most important gap to fill is the left midfield slot. And other than Downing, talk seems to have gone pretty quiet here. Although there are some positive rumours coming from the Downing camp, my impression is that there is too large a gap between our offer and Boro’s expectations for any deal to be concluded this week. Do we have a real alternative in mind if our first choice target falls through at this late stage?

Meanwhile, all seems pretty quiet on the right back front too. Now I know we’ve spent a lot as a club over recent seasons, but I do believe if we are to have a better season this time around than we did last season, these two positions need to be filled before midnight on Thursday.
