Guess what? Another defender out injured

Wales' youngest ever international and Spurs' best signing of the summer is facing at least three months out. Yep, Gareth Bale will require an exploratory foot operation following the injury he sustained in the challenge with Fabrice Muamba on 'Black Sunday' against Birmingham. This is a huge blow for us - partly because Bale has looked so good but also because we are short of fit defenders and short of left midfielders. Still, he's young and he'll be back, but it won't make the season any easier.

And talking of Birmingham, a word or two on Alex McLeish. I really don't understand why he was nominated for Coach of the Year on BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday evening. Yes he did well with the Scottish national side in his short time with them, but who really deserves the credit? Walter Smith without doubt. Smith took over a struggling side and led them to climb 70 places in FIFA's rankings. McLeish turned up when the really hard part had been done and built on someone else's foundations, and even then failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Thankfully a very deserving Enzo Calzaghe was named as Coach of the Year.

And on the subject of coaches, yesterday's other news was that Mourinho had ruled himslef out of the England job. I'm not surprised and not that disappointed - although he's a great coach I think he'd be wasted in an international role. He's a club man through and through, and until he gets a but older that's where he should remain. As far as I'm concerned this now paves the way for Capello, who (other than myself) has always been my preferred choice. Fabio has been successful everywhere he's been, he's at the point in his career where he doesn't want to be on the training ground day in day out, and most importantly he's hungry for his next challenge and wants this job. Let's just hope the FA don't balls up his appointment.
