Oh sh*t, Defoe's actually off

Forget the usual excitement of Transfer Deadline Day (TDD), it's all going wrong today as the Press Association have just announced that Spurs and Pompey have agreed a fee for Defoe.

Now I know JD doesn't have the best of luck at Spurs under either Jol or Ramos, and will undoubtedly improve his own career by moving onwards, but I think this is a massive blow for Tottenham.

I have read words along the lines of "Harry Redknapp has been an admirer of Defoe" more times than I've had hot dinners, but it seems that Portsmouth have stumped up with enough cash to allow Defoe to talk to Harry once again. Presumably the two have a decent relationship dating back to their time at Upton Park together... so despite the chance of featuring in a cup final I presume JD will be finalising personal terms in the next few hours.

And with this happening so last minute it does not give us time to bring in an adequate replacement, which kind of screws us for the remainder of the season. With Berba all but definitely off this summer and Ramos allegedly not being a fan of Bent, we're in a right old mess. I know I'm panicking now and probably not making much sense but Defoe is a terrific player who we should be holding on to.

I know Ramos doesn't speak great English, so Poyet, please get in your car, drive down to the South Coast and do what you can to hang on to our prized super-sub! If we are serious about challenging for honours and for European qualification then we need a decent squad. That means four quality strikers. Defoe is very much part of our future, even if he doesn't get all the first team football he currently wants. Noooo, this is very bad news...

In other TDD news it has emerged that Gilberto has failed his Tottenham medical and the deal has fallen through. I don't think it's the end of the world as Gunter has looked very good in his short Tottenham career to date, and with Lee still around and Bale due back in a few months I don't think we really need the Brazilian. I feel a bit sorry for Hertha Berlin though as it now presumably means Gilberto will leave for free on a Bosman when his contract runs out this summer.

Tottenham won't miss him in the slightest despite how the JD fanboys will try to twist it.

You can have my season ticket and carling cup final toilet paper ticket if JD leaves!

I heard that we're in for Villa if defoe goes....

I like JD but lets face it, he's not doing the biz and as a 4rd choice is not doing himself any favours starying-Look at the England squad today. Keane and Berba are 1st choice anywhere, with Bent as #3 for the rest of the seaosn our top 3 forwards are pretty damned good. Good luck to JD down douth (if he goes)....I hope he does well.

Unbelievable. Tottenham might as well sell WHL if this is how our board and manager see us progressing and growing as a club. Levy and Commolli, you really are thicker than you look. Get on the blower and beg JD to stay, if you don't it'll show how you prefer money (remember you sold Carrick as well) to progression.

Has anyone heard anymore on the comment made by Dan Roan (skysports)who said that if Defoe went, Spurs may go for David Villa?

JD has been performing below-par for the last two seasons, and his ongoing contract negotiations, and regular appearances in the Sunday papers are a distraction. It is in everyone's interest that he leaves, none more so than his own, as he is currently going backwards. If he fails to take this opportunity to work for a manager who obviously believes in him, then it is clear he has no ambition but is only interested in running down his contract so he can maximise his wages when he goes on a free.

JD is a good finisher but does not do enough for the team and Ramos is aware of this. He is trying to build a team that can finish top four and JD will never be part of that.
I would love to have your carling cup final ticket - thanks much appreciated.

God sake....

a) I don't think the club would have accepted a bid for him if they didn't have a replacement in mind.

b) Ramos doesn't speak English? What language do you think he was speaking to Fergie, when they were pictured on the BBC, chatting at length, before the FA Cup tie.

c) Villa? There is no way he'd come to Spurs... I'm sorry but that rumour is complete cr@p

Sad to see him go but it will be best for him. Bet we get a suprise replacement to bed into the club and team till the end of the season before he steps up to replace Dimi.. then we will also replace JD properly and also Bent.

Anonymous said...

suprised here, but i think he'll go, and i could see us buying Downing tonight.
I dont think Ramos will be too desperate if we dont get a 4th choice striker, it maybe change of shape if we dont get a replacement, i.e. 1 up front. Other alternative would be a loan for Kerzakov etc?????

Anonymous said...

17:00 - dont make use of that cup final ticket yet, i'll have it!

Anonymous said...

I would just like to point out that JD, has kept on saying he would sign a new deal and how much he loves the club, my view is let him go if he doesn't sign a new contract, We don't want another Campbell all over again.

Anonymous said...

Kanoute is on his way to replace JD - mark my words!

mattspur said...

Had plenty of opportunities as sub and still missed easy chances (remember one in each leg against the A*se). Good luck to him but he'll never be more than a sub whilst Keano's at Spurs. And let's face it we need the cash after our recent spending spree. And that lad who'll give up his cup fina ticket if JD leaves - what a twat! Sell it on Ebay!

Jesus no I would rather have G Rasiak back!!!!! lol

Anonymous said...

in Ramos we trust...JD not the finished item for where we are going under Ramos...THFC must have a striker ready to come in now or in the summer

Anonymous said...

JD's a good player, not a great one.
I'm not that upset he's off.
He squandered numerous chances this season whether starting or from the bench, The BMJ decider against Getafe being that which sticks in my mind most!!
Good luck to him.
Maybe now bent will get a decent run in the side, if no improvement flog him in the summer as well.
Now -- lets get Villa. COYS

very much agree with 503 - if we get to the summer without jd having signed a contract (he can always keep making excuses about lack of pitch time) we will get a lot less for him - he and bent are in my opinion of pretty similar standard so its no massive blow as long as keane/berb stay fit - jd can look good when coming on against tired defeces for 15 mins but not as a starter - also misses tons of easy chances - ps anyone else wants to volunteer their ticket?!

good riddance. all defoe cares about is himself and i for one wont miss him at all. i hope the deal goes through.

Anonymous said...

Who could possibly miss him,
he`s totaly useless,
he wanders contantly offside,
cant read a pass to or from himself
just dashes about and smashes the
ball as if he hates the thing,
usually missing open goals,
the only use he has, is to play him
in a cup game against poor oposition.
How anyone can rate this idiot is
beyond me.
And as for englands so called no 1
who doesnt consider he should ever be dropped.
Cherny may not be Shay Given but he`s miles better then Robinson
for the last two seasons he`s cost us endless points with his erratic
strange style of goalkeeping.
For gods sake be rid ofhim as well.

Defoe says the right things in public to keep the fans onside but he must have Sol-like motives if he won't sign a contract. If he doesn't go and doesn't sign a contract then it'll be clear. If he goes in the summer we may only get half of what we'll get now. Go now with our best wishes and prove yourself lad.

Agree with the Robinson comment,
...dead wood...
...get rid of...

buy Rob Green from our feeder club,
he he he!!

Please go easy on Robbo the guy has had a alot of stick recently, people forget that we have played the majority of this withou a settled defence, granted the guy has made some mistakes but I believe if we can get Woody and King playing in defence for the rest of the season, then I could see a Robbo getting back to his best, you don't become a bad keeper over night!!!

mattspur said...

I agree with 5.21. Cerny's look good but with a better defence that Robbo had. Admit that Robbo has looked a right pudding with some of his clangers but with a better back 4 he would have much more confidence. Let Defoe go but give Robbo another chance.

Anonymous said...

He's had enough time to prove himself, always wants to blast it, never any variations, always offside, can't play with his back to goal, it's a shame but he hasn't progressed. Bent will get a chance to prove he can do it, if not we'll be getting the cheque book out again in the summer. Pekart or Dixon when fit might get a look-in at the end of the season if we can't qualify

Defoe is always either offide or falling over!!! Good riddance to him. I used to be an admirer of his (prefered him to Robbie Keane)but he has seem to lost the hunger which made him a lethal striker. All round game not up to it and his finishing woeful at times.

Please do not bring kanoute back as replacement Ramos!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Well 17.21 of the teams ahead of Spurs in the league, how many would have Robbo as their No.1

I don't think you'll need all your fingers to work that one out.
Again not a bad keeper, but not a great one

Anonymous said...

17:27 What the former England No 1, yeah that's really difficult!! Come on be sensible.

mattspur said...

So 5.27 who's the answer in goal? Cerny certainly isn't long term.

At least I won't have to hear that pathetic "jermaine Defoe, he is a yiddo" chant from the morons dowm the lane.

He is a boyhood Arsenal supporter who whilst playing youth football at Senrab, dreamed of playing for the same club as his hero Mr Bigfatwife.

This fact, the idiots within seem to forget.

Anonymous said...

OK then name five of the top ten who would have Robbo, and keep a straight face.
BTW being former Enland no.1 is no reccomendation, i assure you...
Oh I mean anywhere other than in England fan's heads!!
;)

mattspur said...

5.33 agree that chant is cr*p. What'll Pompey chant for him "Jermaine Defoe he's a sailor ooooooh"

mattspur said...

5.34 it's not a case of who else would have him but what other quality keeper is available and would want to come?

Jermaine Defoe scores goals

I can’t believe you can be so short sighted and flippant about a guy who guarantees 20 goals a season.
What happens when Berbatov leaves in the summer ‘he’s only happy for now’! and /or if the
other strikers pick up serious injuries we will be left with Darren Bent only and end up paying 20 million on a panic buy.

Why do we want Jermaine Defoe to score goals against Tottenham for the loss of six points + knock us out of a cup competition because it always works like that! He should be rotated by Ramos and playing for England.

I posted at the time that England would lose to Russia and Croatia if he didn’t play and if England were to lose at least McClaren would get the sack!! and I was slagged off merciless by other Spurs and England fans, but unfortunately I was proved right.

Can you really blame the guy for accepting the Portsmouth offer if this isn’t sorted out soon! What is he supposed to do when he’s that good and still doesn’t get picked for either team. I have agreed with the players that have left so far but Defoe wants to wear the shirt. I defy any player to perform well when their always coming on under pressure with 20 minutes to go, or the first person to taken off when things go wrong.

I’m totally relieved that Kevin Prince-Boateng’s rumors are untrue; his last season in the Bundesliga voted Young Player of the Year is not a fluke! We need to be patient.
He is big, tough, quick agile and likes to put his foot in. Every one knows, for a foreign player in the premiership it usually takes 12-18 months to settle, plus there are at least 4-5 ahead of him at spurs that could and should be shipped out!

I'd rathr we sold bent than Defor, but indefence of Spurs management, he has been asked sevbral times to renew his contract...remember Cambell

Anonymous said...

I think it makes sense to sell DeFoe. Berbatov is looking so good these days, whipping in those devastating 25-yarders into the top corner and with Keane so prolific he can afford to choose to miss about 90% of his chances to make the game more interesting we obviously have the deadliest strike force in the Prem. Then of course there is Dazza waiting in the wings which is where he usually is when he should be in the middle. Add to this that we have hopefully a European campaign to pursue and need ti improve our League position it obviously makes sense to sell a good striker especially when David Villa can't wait to sit on our bench behind Keano....what you thought you would get a game if you came David? I think Rasiak may well make a comeback at this rate.

Norwegian Spur said...

Defoe is a good player and would be perfect for Pompey, but honestly I don't think it will mean much for us if he packs up his stuff and leave. I'm getting the feeling he will never ever be first choice at Tottenham and to get nine million for your number four striker is a pretty good deal. I reckon both Spurs and Defoe will be better off with him joining Pompey.

mattspur said...

Blimey 5.51 that was a rant. Fact is, Pompey offer £9m for a player who won't sign a contract. We accept. If we don't we have an unhappy player (despite what he says) whos not in great form, that may eventually b*gger off for nothing. If he goes, he goes. We won't suffer that much. Bent is back soon as we will probably buy someone else.

As for Boateng he is sh*te! I asked some german fans when on holiday about him. They all looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders. They'd never heard of him. From then I suspected he could be sh*t....and he is!(even Taino looks world class against him) Not the quality that Ramos wants! Get rid and get someone better.

this is the coming to head ultimatum that has been coming a long time .. if Defoe goes then good luck to him and I sincerly wish him all the best. However he has the choice to stay. The only thing about ultimatums is that they don't awlays go your way and for that reason I am p/ssed off that Spurs waited until the last minute to do this. If he goes whoi will replace him? maybe Bent will start seeing more action .. I still think Defoe is a better player .. see all the sh/t you've caused Comoli??!

mattspur said...

18.14 Maybe they just didn't see it coming. Pompey are only in for Defoe cos Benjani is going to Man City, otherwise they wouldn't have offered for Defoe. they probably just see it as great business (and a profit)for a 4th choice striker who won't sign a contract.

Anonymous said...

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL DECISION!! JD is a yiddo! and a great move for him as he WILL be their top striker. Will score 20 goals a season for them without doubt. a shame him and keane cant play in the same team as if they started the same amount of games they would bang in the goals.

Spurs you are fools once again. Pompey, you will become a better team than us, actually you already are!!

Dubspurs said...

The more things change the more things stay the same. I cant believe Ramos would be dumb enough to sell Defoe, this has got Commolli written all over it. He doesnt want to admit to his f**k up with Bent by selling him so makes defoe the scapegoat. If Keane gets injured now we're screwed. Imagine Bent and Berbatov running around wembley like headless chickens on the 24th. We're no better now than we were before the window opened. We havent bought a winger but let Routledge go. We've bought one of the most injury-prone backs in the country. If anyone thinks Woodgate and King are going to form a partnership for the future forget it. Please don't go Jermaine!
