Half the Tottenham squad to leave

As regular readers know, I'm not one to spend much time discussing transfer rumours. A club of the stature of Tottenham is constantly being linked to potential new signings. In the last 12 months alone I would estimate we've been linked with 200-400 players. Trying to remain on top of that would give me a headache. I'd rather pass my judgement when the potential signings get a little closer to reality.

Anyway, bringing in new players is a subject for a later date. Before we can shell out much more money, we'll undoubtedly need to raise some funds from player sales. Of the 30 players in the first team squad that we ended the season with, I think there is a good chance that half of those will be on their way out of the WHL exit door before the end of the transfer window on 31st August.

So, time to put my neck on the line. If I want to write an eye-catching headline and make a bold prediction, I ought to back it up... so here are my two cents on our squad.

Goalkeepers:

  • Robbo - I rate him as a keeper but acknowledge he's had a tough season. I think it's inevitable that he'll leave and from his point of view I think a change will do him the world of good. I still believe he can be England's Number 1 again. Good luck Paul, you need to move on to resurrect your career.

  • Cerny - already left as his loan period expired. Now with West London's richest club!

  • Alnwick - still only 21 and apparently has lots of potential so is worth keeping around for a bit longer. If we don't sign two keepers, Alnwick will presumably step up to be second choice.

  • Forecast - warmed the bench when Robbo got injured (and Alnwick was out on loan); young enough to keep around for the future.
Defenders:
  • Ledders - he might be plagued with injury problems, but as club captain and Tottenham legend, Ledley will always have a role to play for Spurs.

  • Woody - a legend-in-the-making. Best piece of January transfer window business I can think of (for any side, ever). Scored the winner at Wembley and will always be remembered for that. If he can stay fit and continue to improve then maybe he can dislodge the racist from the England side???

  • Daws - unfortunately I think he'll be off pretty soon. I like Daws and have been impressed with him ever since his debut at Anfield. Admittedly he hasn't had a great season, and it seems that Ramos will call time on his Spurs career imminently.

  • Kaboul - OK he didn't set the world alight in his first season at WHL, but has potential. Seems he won't be given the chance to fulfil it with us though. Likely to join 'Arry on the South Coast pretty soon.

  • Gardner - off as soon as Hull can sort out the paperwork. Thanks for your service Tony and good luck for the future.

  • Rocha - I get the impression he was brought in as a panic buy last season. Hasn't really settled. Likely to move on and will probably head back to Portugal.

  • Hutton - another great mid-season purchase who has a decent future ahead of him at Spurs.

  • Bale - suffered a cruel injury blow early on, but already had enough time to prove that he can do the business. Going nowhere.

  • Chimbonda - he might be Mr Versatile but Ramos doesn't like his attitude in training and I didn't like his attitude after the cup semi-final victory and then when he was substituted at Wembley. Certainly leaving. Probably off to Villa or Newcastle.

  • Lee - not a bad player but probably not good enough to take us to the next level. There have been rumours about him leaving long before Ramos arrived. Will most likely depart this summer.

  • Gilberto - personally I'm not yet convinced, but since he's only been with us for a few months I think he'll be around for a while yet. Would hopefully make a good understudy for Bale.

  • Stalteri - likely to be reunited with BMJ at Hamburg later this summer. Never been in Ramos' plans and was on loan at Fulham for the second half of last season.

  • Assou-Ekotto - has never been my cup of tea. Looked like a Conference player on our first visit to the Emirates. Has been unfortunate with injuries but has no future with us.

  • Gunter - one for the future. Able deputy to Hutton and can also play at left-back. Impressed when given the chance last season.
Midfielders:
  • Jenas - the player who divides fans the most! In my opinion he's great on his day, but "his day" is only as regular as a leap year. Will probably stick around for the time being, but may not start as many games as he has done so far, especially now that we've signed Modrić.

  • Zokora - perhaps he has never quite lived up to his original billing, but a player I like. Until we bring in a world class defensive midfielder I think there is a key role for him at WHL.

  • Huddlestone - despite a few rumours linking him with a move away I think he'll stick around. Yes he has lots of potential, but more importantly I think he's been improving regularly and is therefore beginning to fulfil that potential. Has turned a few games this season and would be good to keep around.

  • Tainio - another player I like. Battles hard for the team and has done a job for Ramos when called upon this season. No reason for him to leave.

  • Boateng - unlike this guy. I'm not a fan of Kevin-Prince. Not only does he have a poncey name but he hasn't done it for me on the pitch. Will hopefully leave this summer.

  • Taarabt - a guy who excites the crowd when he has the ball at his feet, but has failed to deliver the killer pass (since his debut at Upton Park). I think he'll be off, hopefully just on loan, but he needs to improve his all-round game before playing in the Tottenham first team.

  • Malbranque - my player of the season and someone who I hope will stick around for a long time to come. Works so hard and has a key role to play, but may face competition from dos Santos if the newcomer is selected to play on the left of midfield.

  • Lennon - an incredibly exciting talent who I got very excited about two or three years ago. But he's failed to learn to cross the ball in that time and therefore I think he needs to move on. I have a lot of time for Lennon, but I think he needs a change of environment himself to really push on and improve. Could well earn us a decent wedge to spend on new faces.

  • O'Hara - had a great debut season and has just signed a new deal so will be with us for a while yet. Needs to play in a regular position so that he can really improve and step up to the next level (i.e. challenging for a starting berth, even when the squad is fully fit).
Attackers:
  • Berba - a Spurs legend who is obviously leaving us this summer. A massive blow, but good luck to him (as long as he goes abroad). I said it would be a dark day when he leaves, but with the signings of Modrić and dos Santos, I feel a little less pessimistic.

  • Keano - I can't see Robbie leaving until he gets to about 32 and finds first team starts harder to come by, when I expect he'll head off to Celtic for a year or two before retirement. Another legend who will have a key role to play next season. It'll be interesting to see how him and dos Santos fit together. Personally I'd favour playing the Mexican out wide as I don't think they could both play upfront together. Excited to see what Ramos thinks though come August!

  • Bent - hasn't really settled yet and with all of the current media speculation, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bent leave. A decent player, but if he's not going to be given enough starts then it is hard to prove himself and win over the fans. If Berba isn't replaced with a big name then Darren will inevitably get more starts, but not sure that fans will be very happy if a direct replacement isn't brought in for Berba.
So there we go. That's my take on things. Of the 30 players we had at the end of May, I think 15 of them will be gone by the end of August, but I'd be interested to hear your opinions...

An incredibly insensitive and stupid remark to make by the writer of this article. That word that you use is bandied about too often and has no substance behind it and one can only assume you are referring to John Terry. However one can also assume that you forget about the misdemeanours of our own Woodgate in the not too distant past.Yet you mention him as replacing him in the England team,is it ok to do what he did as long as he plays for us?.I switched off after that, seems unnecessary and ludicrous bandwagon jumping...

N7, Excellent article great opinions on all the players. I would love as to line up against boro with this starting eleven.
Hart,hutton,woodgate,king,bale. Bentley/lennon,modric,jenas/zokora,dos santos,keane and berba.
I think we stand a chance of buying hart and bentley plus I think berba will stay(praying). Zokora was excellent in the cup final if he can play like that then no problem.

I agree that this huge overhaul needs to happen, but disagree with a few players as i think you've let favouritsm cloud your judgement. Tainio is off, and Boateng will stay.

15:29 calm down. Woody paid for his misdemeanours. He has owned up to his mistakes and moved on from then. Terry gets away with a lot more than he should. If he wants to be the England captain he ought to start behaving like one. My argument that Woody could replace Terry has nothing to do with race - that was just a side comment. I think Ferdinand's place is more secure than Terry's - so if Woody wants to play for England, Terry is the guy he needs to dislodge.

As for the word being bandied around too often and having no substance, I think you may have forgotten some of the events of the past.

Putting our rival teams down is fair game. You read any of their websites and they do the same to us. Banter between fans is part of football.

Hey I know about banter and I am no lover of Terry either, always seems to go out of his way to wind Spurs fans up.All I am saying is the use of that word, you get called that word these day's for looking at someone the wrong way.Overrused, and unncessary..

We really need a defensive midfielder to play alongside Modric in the centre of the park. Would also like to see a top drawer centre half to play alongside woodgate, ledleys time has been and gone now with injury to be considered a first team regular- shame but a fact. then a goalkeeper is needed. then i believe a right midfielder is required (assuming santos is going to play left midfield). then we will need a direct replacement for Berbatov obviously.
So in summary i honestly believe that we require FIVE top quality players to be added to the first team (not squad players) in order to get into the top four. once we have a decent looking first eleven i woudl then start to bring more youth players into the fold and integrate them into the first team.
My team to compete with top four:-
Goalkeeper (TBC), Hutton RB, Woodgate (CB), Centre Back (TBC), Bale LB, Right midfielder (TBC, Modric CM, defensive Midfielder (TBC), Santos (LM), Keane (CF), foward (TBC)

As you can see im taking the easy option in not naming potential new players for the positions, im merley trying to state that i believe we are 5 first team players away from challenging the top four.

would sell/release:-

jenas
Zokora
Boatang
Berbatov (he doesnt want to play for us!)
Chimbonda
Esso Ekkota (whatever his name is!)
Stalteri
Gilberto

As you can see there is loads of dead wood to clear out!!!

This what I reckon
Out go Robbo 4mill, Chimbonda 4mill, Lee PY 2mill, Staleri 2mill, Dawson 4mill, Gardner 2mill, Ekotto 2mill, Rocha 2mill, Tainio 2mill, Ghaly 2mill, Bent 12mill,

Loan
Kaboul, Boateng, Taarabt, Dervite, Gunter.

That would bring in 38mill, allowing Spurs to buy Coupet free, Hart 6-8mill, 2 x 10mill CD, 10mill DM.

To the nob that p!ssed is knickers @ the Terry comment, ever heard the term "in jest" I made a comment on a Spurs forum about Cashley a while back and got a ribbing, its all a matter of opinion, its not goin to change your future or anything, so FUCK U PC BRIGADE U BUNCH OF RACIST HOMOPHOBIC DRUG TAKING BABY RAPISTS

If you had any intelligence at all,you subhuman twat. You would see I was taking the pc element out of it you moron. Why don't you lose some of your anger and get a better education?.Hey your mum may like you more.To the rest of us you'd still be a twat though...COYS!!

New Goalkeeper (TBC)
Bale (LB)
Woodgate (CB)
New Centre back (TBC)
Hutton (RB)
Santos (LM)
Modric (CM)
New Defensive midfielder (TBC)
New right midfielder (TBC)
Keane (CF)
New foward (TBC)

If we could fill the TBC positions with new players and relegate the lieks of zokora, jenas to the bench or to west ham then we will be challenging for honours- troubel is its a lot of players to buy at a very high cost!

Guys, this blog is about the spurs squad, not John Terry or any other issue. Stick to the subject

Good Article, I however would let Zokora go, because Modric will play, and boy does he look good, I would allow Lennon to go out on loan, he needs to rediscover his form, and maybe a year out will enable this, I like Tainio and Lee, but not sure if Juande will keep them on always good squad players, and would everyone get off Bent's Back, give him a chance and he will not disapoint. COYS.

Hey just because Terry called Ledley a ***** **** doesn't make him a racist. He calls all Foreigners that

Agree with most of what you say but (a) I think that it is very important to get rid of Jenas - he's an average player with a poor first touch, with only a good engine - he'd moreover bring lots of transfer cash for Ramos; (b) Modric can actually play DM, in the style of Carrick and we could even pair Dos Santos and Modric in the centre, with maybe Capel on the left, with Malbranque and Huddlestone covering, although it would be better to bring in a top DM and play him with Modric; (c) we should get rid of Tainio (runs a lot, no skill) and Zokora (not good enough for what we aspire to); and (d) we should break the bank for a top DM (maybe M-Diarra of Real Madrid) or Yaya Toure as part of the Berbatov deal to Barcelona or maybe Lassana Diarra; (e) we should keep Kaboul (if Ramos can forgive his remarks) but get rid of Dawson (limited skill, no passing ability).

I love the way that you automatically assume the author was refering to John Terry! You yourself must therefor agree with the comment about his turbulent past!

Disgrace of an England captain both on and off the field. It's just a shame there's not really many players who can behave better than him!

I will hark back to a comment I made a few seasons ago and state it again. If we are to push on we need to buy a world class leader who can drive everyone else to realise their full potential. I first suggested this when we were after Figo and then again when we bought Davids. To me it was no surprise when we finished fifth (pipped on the last day to fourth) The following season was a carry over from the previous one. Last year was a disaster and there was no winner in this mould. Not sure who that would be right now but that is the sort of player we need to attract. I sincerely hope Dos Santos and Modric will be great but I feel we need more. I will say though that as a team we are very close and the right signing will make all the difference.

I think Berba will stay....and anyone who says he doesn't want to play for us is an idiot. Why on earth can't people see that his style of play may look lazy but it is never going to change!

Interesting that Man Utd have told Madrid to get stuffed re Renaldo and Liverpool have said the same to Chelsea re Torres. Would Levy have the guts to tell Berbatov he can sit in the stands if he doesn't want to see out his contract at Spurs? Maybe that's why Man Utd and Liverpool play in the Champions League and Spurs don't?

To many people playing football manger 08, reality check ledley is injury prone but arguably the best centre back this country has, i wish people would refraim from writing him off, he has had alot of injuries yes but still has a big future to play. As for dos santos do people really think he is coming in to play as a reugular i beg to differ, he will be used as a second striker as he is not an out and out CF or out on either wing.Modric will be used across the whole of the middle of the park and is great signing.Im not to sure there will be to many more signings apart from another striker dependant on Berbatov who knows what will happen there Robbo's house is up for rent id say he has been told he has no future, great shame he has some real bad personal problems of late and personally wish him and his family all the best. We also have some great youth allready at the club whih people seem to overlook.

Coupet/Hart/Alnwick(GK)
Hutton/lee/Gunter(RB)
Bale/Gilberto/Ekkott (LB)
Woodgate/Dawson/Dervite (CB)
King/Boulahrouz/Henville (CB)
Lennon/Dos Santos/Tarrabt(RM)Malbranque/Capel/rose (LM)Modric/Jenas/Boateng/(CM)
Zokora/Huddelstone/O'hara (DM)
Keane/Garcia/Barcham(CF)
Berbatov/Bent/Perkhart (CF)

Great Article, from one true spurs fan to the other i think that your predictions are very accurate. However, if you look at out attackers, should Berba and Bent leave then it a must that we sign at least 2 or 3 more to fill the void. I reckon that Negredo, Milito, Garcia and Eto'o will arrive I hope.

AS ROMA V SPURS _ Kick ASS!!!!!!

Hang on, 15.29, are you saying Terry ISN'T a racist piece of muck?

And don't start pointing at the pasts of others as if that has any relevance.

Terry's a dog and if you haven't grasped that by now, then you're clueless.
